We are looking for an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys looking after people, to act as a Chalet Host, working alongside a Chalet Chef, to help run one of our Alpine Chalets in the spectacular Dolomites of northern Italy, from Mid-May until the end of September.

Collett's are a small, independent mountain holiday specialist, who have been operating in the Dolomites since 1998. We are looking for sociable, friendly and engaging people to join a small, friendly resort team, many of whom are returning staff, who know the chalets and the job well, and who would make the settling in period as easy as possible.

In the summer, we have guests coming out to enjoy the outdoor opportunities which the area provides, from hill-walking & Via Ferrrata (fixed cable scrambles on sheer rock faces) to the wildflowers and local WW1 history, as well as road cycling and mountain biking. They stay with us in Alpine chalets where we try to create a home from home atmosphere, offering very genuine hospitality in an informal setting.

The Job

You would be part of a team of 7 or 8 people helping to run the chalet day to day, with particular responsibility for the Domestic Management of the chalet each day and assisting the Chalet Chef in the kitchen each morning and evening. You would be very much be at the heart of our guests' holiday, eating with them each evening, and looking after them as if they were staying in your own home.

The chalets in question sleep between 22 and 30 guests, and we are cooking for up to 30 - 35 guests. Whilst the Chalet Chef focuses on preparing the evening meal in the morning, this leaves the Chalet Host to look after a number of other jobs; making sandwiches for guests who have ordered a packed lunch for the day; preparing and putting out a buffet breakfast, hosting the breakfast, making sure everyone has what they need, and topping up the buffet as needed; clearing breakfast, washing up and cleaning the dining room, laying the table for the evening meal; cleaning the chalet communal areas, as well as doing any light room cleans and changeover cleans needed that day. With all these jobs, you would be assisted daily by two other members of the chalet team, for the whole morning (and dinner service in the evening). Once the cleaning is over, you would offer the Chalet Chef any assistance they might then require in the kitchen for the rest of the morning.

In the evening, you would start work again around 5pm, assisting the Chalet Host Chef with the final preparations for the evening meal, then with dinner service itself. As well as serving, you would be washing up between courses and helping to shut down the kitchen after service. You would also be eating one or two courses with your guests as well as serving tea and coffee to them, socialising as you go.

Weekly jobs in conjunction with the Chalet Chef would involve downloading arriving guest information reports, performing stock checks, food ordering and sending any receipts back to our UK office to help us look after your monthly budget etc...

You would need to be a great team player, tolerant, understanding and empathetic. The chalet is run by a team of seven or eight people, one of whom is the Chalet Manager. The rest of the team are the Ski Host/Walk Organisers who accompany our guests on Organised Snowshoe Walks and Ski Days. They are also your fellow Hosts' in the chalet, with as much responsibility to the day to day running and hospitality as you. On a day to day basis they take it in turns to help with the domestic management of the place: cleaning, washing up, dinner service etc.

The relationships and hopefully, friendships, which develop as a result of working and living so closely with your colleagues are a big part of the seasonal experience for many people, and the sense of camaraderie and positive energy which is created is something our guests enjoy and comment on.

If you have run chalets before and prefer to work alone in a kitchen, then this might not be your cup of tea. You have to embrace the team element of these chalets to make it work. What we offer to our guests could not be provided by two people alone.

 Experience Required

Ideally some experience of domestic work in a tourist related industry, but this is not compulsory. It would help if you have a strong interest in food, and some experience of cooking so that you could assist the Chalet Chef at times in the kitchen.

What is essential is that you need to be a great communicator, and a warm, engaging personality who enjoys looking after people and who would relish creating a home from home atmosphere in the chalet.

Qualifications & other paperwork:

Although the job is based in Italy you would need to have the legitimate right to work in the UK. Practically this means you would need to have:

  • British National Insurance Number
  • A British Bank account into which we could pay your wages

Qualifications / Certificates Needed

  • Current First Aid certificates
  • Current Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificates

Both of these can be done online if you don't already have them.

The Package

As well as a weekly wage of £120 we provide you with all meals (except the evening meal on the day off) accommodation, travel to and from resort & medical insurance, and a two-week period of orientation and training at the start of the season in the Dolomites. We also provide you with a 'mountain pass' for the local chairlifts and cable cars in the valley, which additionally give you discounts on local bus routes. Our local outdoor shops also offer our staff free bike hire in the afternoon, and free Via Ferrata kit hire.

Winter Season Opportunities

We enjoy the continuity of having many past staff members returning to us each season. Many people who do a summer are interested in staying on for the winter, when the dolomites are transformed into a winter wonderland, boasting one of the most extensive ski areas in the world.

Attached to the form we ask you to send:
